‘Who’s the Boss?’ reboot in the works

It didn’t seem likely a year ago, but “Who’s the Boss?” is coming back.

Tony Danza and Alyssa Milano have agreed to reprise their father-daughter roles for a reboot of the series that ran from 1984 to 1992, Entertainment Weekly reported.

The pair played Tony and Samantha Micelli in 196 episodes of the venerable sitcom. Tuesday, officials at Sony Pictures Television said a reboot was in the works.

Danza will reprise his role, but now as a retired housekeeper, while Milano will play a single mother who lives in the home where the original series was set, according to Variety.

“Here we go,” Danza tweeted Tuesday.

Judith Light and Danny Pintauro, who appeared in every episode of the original series, have decided not to return for the new series but reportedly have given their blessing to the reboot, Entertainment Weekly reported. Katherine Helmond, who played Light’s mother in the series, died in February 2019 at the age of 89. That was the original reason Danza did not want to do a series reboot, the website reported.

Sony, however, left the door open for Light, who was Danza’s boss and later romantic interest, and Pintauro, who played Light’s son to return, according to The Associated Press.

They are “supportive of the new series,” the studio said. “The cast remains very close to this day and the hope is to find creative ways to work them and their characters into the show.”

The new version of “Who’s the Boss?” “will explore generational differences, as well as opposing world views and parenting styles within the dynamic of a modern family in 2020,” in line with Lear’s shows, Sony said in its statement.

The show averaged more than 33 million viewers per episode during its run on ABC, Deadline reported.

Norman Lear will be the show’s executive producer.

Milano also tweeted about the reboot, writing that she is “so excited”

“We feel the time is right to tell the story of where these amazing characters are today. Can’t wait to share their stories with you. So happy,” she wrote.
