NEW YORK — The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board say they are planning to investigate a close call between two planes Friday evening on a runway at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York.
The incident happened between a plane crossing a runway and another plane that was preparing to take off, according to The Associated Press. An air traffic controller reportedly noticed that a plane, which was operated by American Airlines, was crossing in front of a Delta Boeing 737 aircraft.
The controller was able to communicate with the Delta plane, urging the crew to cancel takeoff. Crew members were able to stop safely just as the other plane crossed in front of them around 8:45 p.m., the FAA said in a statement obtained by the AP.
The FAA statement reportedly said that the Delta plane stopped about 1,000 feet from where the American Airlines plane had crossed from a nearby taxiway, according to the AP.
The FAA said they will be investigating the incident and so will the NTSB, according to the AP.
No further information has been released.
