Michigan State Police said on social media that their investigation revealed that the Dearborn Police Department was attempting to stop a vehicle that was believed to be involved in an endangered missing person investigation. Officers engaged the car in a pursuit.

Dearborn officers lost sight of the suspect’s vehicle shortly before it crashed. As officers approached the crashed vehicle, state police said there was an exchange of gunfire between the officers and the suspect.

“I go look out the front door outside and this car had gone into this house right where I live, the window is completely broken,” Rehab Jadallah, a witness, told WJBK.

When officers began to clear the crash scene, they found the driver dead from a gunshot wound. Officers then found human remains in the trunk of the suspect’s vehicle.

Police told WJBK that the car involved, a Dodge Charger, was involved in an endangered missing person investigation out of Murfreesboro, Tennessee.

In its statement on social media, Michigan State Police said that Detroit’s Homicide Task Force would handle the investigation, which “may have ties to another out of state homicide investigation.”

State police said a passenger in the vehicle was taken to the hospital with injuries from the crash.

Police told WJBK the passenger was a 34-year-old woman, and that the body found in the trunk of the vehicle was a 31-year-old woman. Police said it did not appear the woman died from the crash.
