LIST: Halloween, fall events happening in the Jacksonville area

NORTHEAST FLORIDA — Several families plan to safely celebrate Halloween and other fall festivities this year during the coronavirus pandemic.

Action News Jax has compiled a list of local events taking place in the Jacksonville area.

We also reached out to local county and school leaders regarding Halloween celebrations during the pandemic.

DUVAL COUNTY

“Halloween and trick-o-treating is something celebrated every year of which individuals make personal decisions for themselves and their families on whether to participate. Citizens that are participating should do so in a safe and responsible way.”

“Our message to families regarding the pandemic still applies – observe healthy practices such as social distancing, wearing face coverings, and handwashing both in school and in activities outside of school.” -Tracy Pierce of Duval County Public Schools said.

Here is a list of events happening in Jacksonville:

  • Spooktacular: This is an outdoor event that is taking place at the Jacksonville Zoo. Face coverings are strongly recommended but are not required. View the event’s website for more details.
  • Organizers of Haunt Nights, a Halloween event at Jacksonville Beach, say they are following health guidelines amid the COVID-19 situation and its staff will “continuously walk through the attraction every night making sure everything is safe, as well as doing intense daily inspections of our walk-through checking our walls, props, animatronics, customer paths, and actor areas. We have professional cleaners come in daily during our season to clean the facility from the night before.” Visit their website for more information.
  • Jacksonville Ice will be holding Spooky Skating sessions on Friday, October 30 from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. and Saturday, October 31 from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. There will be food specials, music and lights, photo ops, a fog machine and more! $15 includes Spooky Skating festivities, ice skating admission and skate rental. Jacksonville Ice will also be holding a costume contest and will be giving prizes away for the best overall costume, most creative costume, and funniest costume in all three sessions. The first 50 kids to arrive in costume will receive free candy.
  • The Durkeeville Historical Society is hosting a Halloween Fish Fry event on Oct. 31 from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. curbside at 1293 W. 19th Street.
  • Halloweek: Downtown Vision presents a week full of Halloween fun that is set up to keep visitors and businesses safe. For more details on specific events visit their website here: Downtown Jacksonville Halloweek.
  • 13th Floor Haunted House: According to their website, all staff will wear face coverings and will be temperature checked. Event capacity is limited and social distancing will be strictly enforced. Dates: Click here to view.
  • Trick or Treat with the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp on Saturday, Oct. 31 from 12p.m. to 4 p.m. at 121 Financial Ballpark. For more information and to purchase tickets click here.
  • Hollow’s Fest: A Week of Costumes & Candy: Visit the James Weldon Johnson Park (135 W Monroe St in Jacksonville) the week of Oct. 26-30 for some Halloween fun. Each day from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., there will be themed costume days, food trucks and live performances. Click here for more information.
  • Wolfson Children’s Hospital Halloween Drive: Due to COVID-19, the children cannot celebrate with Halloween parties on their floors. The Child Life team has instead updated their Amazon registry to include fun Halloween items to hand out to children so they can still celebrate! A link to their registry can be found here.
  • The Julington Forest will have a Halloween Golf Parade on Friday, Oct. 30 at 7 p.m. Click here for details.
  • Trick-or-treating at Harveys Supermarket and Winn-Dixie stores: There will be complimentary candy stations set up at all Harveys Supermarket and Winn-Dixie stores for trick-or-treating on Oct. 31 from noon to 2 p.m. Face masks are required to be worn. Costumes are encouraged. The stores will also offer a no-cost flu shot (with most insurance plans) to participants in the stores' pharmacy department.

Trunk or treating:

  • Impact Church will hold a drive-thru trunk or treat event at the Regency Square Mall on Saturday, Oct. 31 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Bags of candy will be given to every car that drives by while supplies last. Click here for more information.
  • Paxon Revival Center Church will hold a trunk or treat event on Friday, Oct. 30 from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Click here for more information.
  • First Baptist Church of Jacksonville and the FBC Jax Children and Families will hold a trunk or treat event on Wednesday, Oct. 28 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Click here for details.
  • Crossroad Church UMC in Jacksonville will hold a trunk or treat event on Saturday, Oct. 31 from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Click here for details.
  • The Lovysm Social Club will host a Trunk or Treat on Saturday, Oct. 31 from 1 to 6 p.m. at 3516 Winton Dr. Click here for details.
  • Trunk or Treat on Friday, Oct. 30 at 6 p.m. with the Autobahn Indoor Speedway. You must wear a mask and gloves are encouraged. Read more here.

CLAY COUNTY

Action News Jax received the following statement from Clay County leaders:

"Clay County is not discouraging Halloween Trick-or-Treating this year - we recommend following the CDC guidelines for safer Trick-or-Treating.

• Avoid direct contact with trick-or-treaters

• Give out treats outdoors, if possible

• Set up a station with individually bagged treats for kids to take

• Wash hands before handling treats

• Wear a mask

Clay County advises to turn off outdoor porch lighting If you do not wish to have trick-or-treaters come to your home."

We received the following message from Clay County Schools:

“Our secondary schools are not doing anything. Some of our elementary schools may be doing character parades, but it’s very limited and volunteers/parents aren’t allowed on campus at this time.”

Here are a list of events happening in the Clay County area on Saturday, Oct. 31:

  • Amazing Grace Family Farm’s Fall Festival will take place from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.
  • Candy Krawl, a trick or treating event at the Orange Park Mall will take place from 4 to 7 p.m.
  • Sweeney Todd at The Island Theater will take place at 7:30 p.m.
  • Blu By U Farm’s Fall Festival will take place from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • Open Track Weekend at the FIRM in Keystone Heights will take place 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

ST. JOHNS COUNTY

Action News Jax received the following statement from St. Johns County leaders:

“We do encourage people who participate in the holiday to adhere to the CDC guidelines.”

St. Johns County Schools said:

"We do have some elementary schools doing “character parades” (usually this is tied to a character from a book to promote literacy), they are not allowing parent participation in these this year though. In addition, there is no “trick or treating” or candy collection and distribution this year at our schools."

Here are a list of events happening in St. Johns County on Saturday, Oct. 31:

  • Howl-o-Ween virtual costume contest for Dogs: Hosted by St. Johns County Parks and Recreation. Friday, Oct. 30 starting at noon until Monday Nov. 2. Participants are invited to post a picture of their dogs donning their Halloween costumes on a designate post on the SJC Parks and Recreation Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/sjcparksandrec
  • St. Johns County Parks and Recreation is hosting a “Move in the Park” on Saturday Oct. 31 at Palencia Park. Registration for this event was required and all spots are filled. They had 20 socially-distanced family spots available, which can accommodate five people.
  • The Shearwater neighborhood are participating in a Pumpkin Patch Grab n' Go, Nightmare Before Coffee on the Porch, and a Haunted Drive-Thru.

NASSAU COUNTY

Action News Jax received the following statement from Nassau County leaders:

“Nassau County has no plans to regulate trick-or-treating. With that said, we do encourage families to be safe by avoiding close contact with individuals outside of their immediate family and use of face coverings when unable to distance from others.”

Action News Jax has contacted the school district regarding Halloween. We are waiting to hear back.

The county will not have any sponsored Halloween events according to a spokesperson. Here are a few events Action News Jax found online that will take place in the area.

  • There will be a Halloween Kayak Tour in Amelia Island on Saturday, Oct. 31 from 6 to 8 p.m. Click here for details.
  • There will be a Halloween event at Journey Church in Fernandina Beach on Saturday Oct. 31 from 6 to 8 p.m. Click here for more information.
  • Fear Trails: An outdoor haunted experience will take place at Amelia Shotguns Sports on Oct. 30 and 31. Event organizers say the participants, staff and vendors are encouraged to practice COVID-19 precautionary measures such as wearing a face covering and social distancing. If you’re interested in visiting a corn maze or pumpkin patch this Halloween, we have listed a few locations in the Northeast Florida area below:

  • Conner’s A-maize-ing Acers: The corn maze is located at 19856 County Road 121 in Hillard. According to its website, employees will follow safe sanitation and hygiene practices and will be required to pass a health check. Social distancing guidelines will be in place and hand sanitizing and hand-washing stations will be available to everyone. Read more here.
