After four decades of weekend shopping, bargain hunting and memories, the Pecan Park Flea & Farmers Market has officially closed its gates.
The longtime Northside Jacksonville destination welcomed shoppers for the final time Sunday, September 27, marking the end of a 40-year run.
For many customers, Pecan Park was more than just a place to shop. It became part of their weekend routine and a place where families could spend time together while browsing hundreds of vendor booths.
The market eventually grew to more than 700 vendor stalls, offering everything from clothing and appliances to collectibles, tools, car parts and other hard-to-find items.
The property was sold earlier this year for $8.55 million to a partnership with the Butler family, owners connected to a Georgia-based automotive group. The site is expected to be redeveloped as an automobile dealership.
The Macon, Georgia-based group lists 15 dealerships and three collision centers on its website, including Butler Toyota Jacksonville at 1290 Cassat Ave.
While the market is now closed to shoppers, vendors still until October 31 to clear out their spaces.
The entrance gate will be closed on weekends throughout October, and the property will no longer be accessible after October.
For generations of Jacksonville shoppers, though, the final day was less about what comes next and more about saying goodbye to a Northside tradition that had been part of the community for 40 years.
