E-Bikes: What every parent should know before handing over the keys

E-bikes are everywhere, and while they’re a fun way for kids and teens to get around, they’re also much faster and heavier than a traditional bicycle. That means parents should have a few conversations before the first ride.

Here are a few things to keep in mind:

  • Know the speed. Some e-bikes can reach 20 to 28 mph, making them closer to a moped than a bicycle.
  • Helmets aren’t optional. A properly fitted helmet can make all the difference in a crash.
  • Practice first. New riders should get comfortable in an empty parking lot before riding on busy streets.
  • Follow the rules. Traffic laws apply to e-bikes, too. Stop at signs, ride with traffic, and stay alert.
  • Skip the distractions. No texting, earbuds, or phone use while riding.
  • Charge batteries safely. Use the manufacturer’s charger, avoid overnight charging, and never charge a damaged battery.
  • Be seen. Bright clothing and working lights are essential, especially around dawn, dusk, or at night.
  • Check local laws. Age limits, helmet requirements, and where e-bikes are allowed vary by city and state.

The biggest mistake parents make? Assuming an e-bike is “just a bicycle.” It isn’t. A little training, the right safety gear, and clear rules can help make every ride a much safer one.
