UPDATE 10:35 a.m. -The Shands Bridge has reopened to traffic. The Florida Department of Transportation conducted a safety inspection after a barge hit the bridge around 7 a.m. Wednesday morning. Inspectors determined the bridge is now safe for travel.
7:20 AM: The Shands Bridge is shutdown Wednesday morning after it was hit by a barge, according to Florida Department of Transportation.
“Out of an abundance of caution, bridge inspectors are onsite conducting a thorough assessment,” FDOT stated in a news release.
Clay County Sheriff notes the bridge is closed until further notice.
Motorists are encouraged to seek an alternative route.
