Today is “Breakup Day” — and your wallet might approve

If you’re trimming the holiday budget, some people take it way further.

Some people say you should run your finances like a business. So if money’s tight before Christmas… maybe it’s time to “lay off” a gift recipient.

Today, December 11th, is actually the most popular day of the year to break up with a partner. About 15 years ago, researchers digging through Facebook status changes found the biggest spike in people switching from “In a Relationship” to “Single” happened on this exact date — and ever since, it’s been known as Breakup Day.

A newer study from the dating app Flirtini found that 3 in 4 online daters have experienced a Christmas-season breakup.

Why today? It’s not too close to the holidays to feel cruel, it frees you from buying a gift, and you can dodge those awkward family introductions. Plus, holiday stress — and conversations that make a relationship feel a little too serious — can push shaky romances over the edge.
