Tuhonsty Marie Smith, 29, was charged with arson of a building without the owner’s consent, first-degree recklessly endangering safety, mayhem, and domestic abuse surcharges, according to Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office online booking records.

Smith was being held without bail, online records show.

The victim, Henry Williams, told police that Smith’s behavior had changed drastically since he told her he was leaving the relationship, WDJT reported.

In the early hours of June 3, Williams said he woke up and discovered that his hair was on fire, the television station reported. He attempted to put out the flames with his hands.

Williams then ran to his 3-month-old daughter’s room and took her out of the home, WDJT reported.

Williams suffered second and third-degree burns, the television station reported.

The property owner where Williams and Smith lived is a longtime family friend of the victim.

“Because I’ve known Henry since he was a kid, just heartbroken for him, Denise Wilson told WDJT. “The house is just a thing and that’s why you have insurance but as long as he’s going to be OK, that’s my main concern.

“I’m just glad he was able to get the baby out and that he’s going to be OK,” Wilson told the television station. “It’ll be a long road to recovery with his burns but ultimately he’ll be OK.”

During her initial court appearance, a judge determined that Smith will undergo a competency evaluation, WDJT reported. She will appear in court later this month when the evaluation is completed.

A GoFundMe page was set up to help Williams defray medical costs.
