Kentucky woman arrested after 10-year-old son found dead in car trunk

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — A Kentucky mother was arrested Tuesday night after police found her 10-year-old son dead inside the trunk of her car.

Kaitlyn Renee Higgins, 28, of Louisville, is charged with murder and tampering with evidence, according to the Courier Journal.

An arrest report obtained by the newspaper and other media sources alleges that Higgins attempted to cut her son’s tongue from his mouth before fatally shooting him.

Police officers were called around 9:30 p.m. Tuesday to a home in the 1200 block of Algonquin Parkway, where they were asked to perform a welfare check, the Courier Journal reported. The caller had told the dispatcher she’d seen Higgins with a gun.

The caller had also reported seeing a young boy wrapped in a blanket, dead.

The officers found blood on the front steps and Higgins on the porch.

The newspaper reported that they searched the trunk of Higgins’ vehicle and found her son, whose name has not been released.

When questioned, Higgins confessed to her actions, according to authorities.

Higgins is being held in Louisville Metro Corrections in lieu of $250,000 bond.
